Cecil, the lion, was killed a few days ago in Zimbabwe by a US dentist, who reportedly paid $50,000 for the “honour”. Amidst international condemnation the US government is considering Zimbabwe’s request to extradite the dentist so that he can be tried for his illegal act. If Cecil had been killed in Calais, perhaps the international community would have risen more forcefully in protest and would have demanded action. For now, what is happening in Calais is a bit more than a nuisance, with illegal immigrants desperately trying to cross from France to the UK, hoping to find a better future there, and French police trying to stop them, in coordination with the UK authorities. Many of those illegal immigrants are from Africa, like Cecil the lion was. They are probably wondering, like some of us, when will the European Union get its migration policies right…
